The SP Genevac miVac 2 range is designed to be modular and capable of removing water and organic solvents from a variety of sample formats including tubes, microplates and vials. Applications range from DNA, RNA and peptides, oligosynthesis and clinical diagnostics testing through to molecular biology.
Centrifugal evaporators remove solvent under vacuum: as system pressure drops, the boiling point of the solvent drops with it, so solvents can be removed at very low temperatures. Vapour boiling off the samples is either trapped in a condenser or pumped away. Samples are spun throughout, and the g-force generated is enough to keep each sample in its own tube rather than boiling over.
Choose your concentrator
- miVac 2 DNA — an integrated system supplied complete with a built-in high performance vacuum pump, concentration chamber and a fixed-angle aluminium rotor with 48 positions for 1.5 or 2 ml microcentrifuge tubes. Designed specifically for working with nucleic acids, it suits simple organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol up to 100 °C boiling point, and water in low sample numbers and volumes.
- miVac 2 Duo — accepts a two-swing position microplate rotor or Jet rotors for tubes.
- miVac 2 Quattro — a larger chamber taking a four-swing position microplate rotor and much higher capacity Jet rotors.
Both the Duo and Quattro control the pump, heat and run time, with specialised programs for water, alcohols and other solvents. Setting up uses a single ‘set and select’ control knob and a minimum of keys, with all status and program information on a large LCD display.
Choose your pump
- miVac 2 Duo Pump — a quiet, compact two-head diaphragm pump suitable for removing solvents that boil below 160 °C, including water, methanol, ethanol and their mixtures.
- miVac 2 Quattro Pump — a diaphragm pump reaching 3 mbar, required for successful drying of medium boiling point solvents.
- Super Vacuum Pump — a scroll-type pump for exceptionally demanding uses and freeze-drying, capable of routinely removing higher-boiling solvents at pressures down to 0.15 mbar.
All pumps are controlled automatically by the concentrator. When using solvent mixtures, a wide range of solvents, or a high vacuum pump, the miVac 2 Pressure Controller is recommended: it gives full control over running pressure, and a vacuum ramping mode starts concentration gently to help prevent bumping or spitting.
SpeedTrap — a high power cold trap
The cold condenser coils are suspended in the vapour path, so solvent vapours condense directly onto the coils and run off into the collection vessel below. The user can see the solvents in the trap at a glance and emptying is easy; the redesigned jar ensures safe removal and replacement. Three settings are available:
- Automatic defrost — the system periodically defrosts for a few minutes without interrupting the concentration process, preventing ice build-up. Ideal for solvents liable to freeze.
- Continuous chilling — for most organic solvents, giving the highest recovery. Ideal for solvents that do not freeze above -50 °C.
- Manual defrost — used after continuous chilling with solvents that freeze above -50 °C, for example when freeze-drying.
Rotors and freeze-drying
miVac 2 evaporators are the only ones in their class supplied with rotors made from solid aluminium. Speed increases compared with polypropylene types range between 40% and 200% depending on sample format, because the solid aluminium conducts heat energy to the samples where an open or plastic rotor effectively insulates them. A miVac Duo holds six shallow plates and the larger Quattro up to twenty shallow-well or eight deep-well plates.
The SpeedTrap with a Super Vacuum Pump may be used to freeze-dry up to 250 ml of water or other suitable solvents, or as a stand-alone freeze dryer by fitting the freeze-drying accessory jar in place of the regular collection vessel. Manufacturer’s note: the Duo Pump and Quattro Pump are not suitable for freeze-drying.
